COVID-19 temporary measures | Students travelling to Canada

Before entering Canada

A pre-departure COVID-19 testing requirement is in place for individuals 5 years of age or older who are travelling to Canada. All travellers are required to provide specific information upon entry into Canada. Travellers must use ArriveCAN before boarding their flight to Canada. They can use ArriveCAN up to 365 days before their flight.

Once they have submitted their information through ArriveCAN

  • a receipt will be displayed
  • they will show the receipt to a Canadian border services officer upon entry
  • they can show their ArriveCAN receipt from the app as a screenshot or printout

If they are not travelling with a smartphone

  • they can submit their information by creating an account and signing in online
  • they can print or take a screenshot of their receipt and take it with them when they travel

Cross-border students

If students cross the border into Canada regularly for school, to be able to enter Canada, they must be eligible to obtain a study permit and be attending a DLI with a COVID-19 readiness plan approved by its province or territory.

Cross-border students may also be exempt from having to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival in Canada if

  • they live in the United States and cross the border daily or regularly to attend their classes, and
  • the DLI is in British Columbia

If the province or territory in which the DLI is located isn’t listed above, they will be required to quarantine upon arrival in Canada.

While in Canada, students must

  • wear a mask in any public setting where physical distancing cannot be maintained
  • follow all public health guidelines for the municipality and province or territory in which they study

If someone will be driving the student to and from a DLI regularly, they also don’t need to quarantine for 14 days, as long as

  • they only leave their vehicle to escort the student to and from their school, and
  • they wear a mask at all times while outside their vehicle
  • Valid immigration medical examination results have been added as a required document for students travelling to Canada from the United States and other countries.
  • Students coming to Canada for a short-term program (less than 6 months), who are normally exempt from requiring a study permit under section 188 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations, won’t be admitted under current travel restrictions unless they obtain a study permit.
