3 Initiatives for Refugee Support Announced by Canada

As a firm advocate of human rights, Canada is always on the look for ways to alleviate related crises. In 2020, Canada’s resettled nearly half of the world’s refugee population. Recently, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) addressed Canada as “a bright light in a horrible year for refugee settlement.”

Instead of asking: “What have we done?”, Canada’s question has always been “What more can we do?” To concord with World Refugee Day’s initiatives, Minister Marco Mendicino devised 3 initiatives to support refugees.

Under the new initiatives, Canada will offer asylum to more people in need. along with community sponsorships that expedite their accommodations.

The three initiatives include:

  1. Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot
  2. Protected Persons in Canada
  3. Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program

Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot (EMPP)

Canada’s commitment to refugee settlement takes form in the present tense, we believe that what we devote ourselves to do now, ultimately affects the future. Resolving the global refugee crisis requires more than numbers, for there is a desperate voice behind every numeral. Thomas Wang & Associates (TWA), with our extensive immigration experience in refugee appeals, stand in solidarity with all those in need.

Launched in 2018, the groundbreaking EMPP provides an economic pathway for skilled refugees. Not only does this pilot de-stigmatize the refugee identity, but it also recruits talented individuals for Canada’s development. Today’s announcement settled another 500 refugees and their families by the following improvements:

  • Expedite their permanent residency application processing speed;
  • Waive fees for their applications;
  • Enhance the flexibility for their application process (e.g. deadline extensions);
  • Ease the standard for settlement fund application;
  • Provide pre-departure medical services for immigration medical exams

Protected Persons in Canada

Confronting an unprecedented pandemic, Canada’s asylum acceptance rate persists in equilibrium. Furthermore, Canada will raise its 2021 asylum intake quota from 23,500 to 45,000. So far, 17,900 protected persons have successfully resettled in Canada. The number will continue to climb as application procedures grant greater leniency

Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program

Since its beginning 50 years ago, this program introduced over 350,000 refugees to Canada. Now, it continues to influence on a worldwide scale. Refugees who enter Canada via the program are equipped for lasting success by private sponsors.

Additionally, IRCC sought to perfect the program by enhancing the pre- and post-arrival support services. As a part of IRCC’s manifestation, up to $3 million CAD will be invested in nine sponsoring organizations over two years.
